Why incoming SHS students must choose STEM strand?

Introduction to STEM

The Department of Education's K–12 Program strives to offer ample time for mastery of ideas and skills, as well as to cultivate lifelong learners. It also strives to strengthen the mathematical, scientific, and language skills of Filipino students. Through tracks, the Department of Education claimed to provide higher-quality education. Students will have adequate time to learn a field and improve their abilities on each track. The K-12 Curriculum covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School). The Academic Track has four (4) different strands; the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), and General Academics (GAS).

I have a question for a variety of students who choose, didn't choose, and will choose the STEM Strand. To all of the students who choose another track and strand than STEM, "Why didn't you choose STEM?". To the students who are now STEM students, "What motivates you to choose STEM?". To the STEM students that are now in their College life, "How did you surpass STEM?". To the students that are now entering Grade 11, "Why don't you try STEM?"

What is STEM?

One of the strands in the Academic Track of the new Philippine curriculum is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The STEM strand strives to develop inquisitive minds, logical reasoning, and collaborative abilities. The goal is to give students hands-on learning experiences that will help them better comprehend ideas through application, controlled experiments, research, and practice. This will also assist students in gaining the information and abilities required for engineering, architecture, medical / health sciences, and computer studies degree programs.

What will I become if I choose STEM?

This strand is for you if you wish to be an engineer, architect, pilot, statistician, scientist, chemist, biologist, astronomer, dentist, physician, nutritionist, nurse, doctor, pharmacist, and so on.

What abilities should I have if I want to pursue STEM?

The following are some of the potential qualities you should have if you pursue this strand, STEM: the capacity to analyze, the capacity to work efficiently, the capacity to communicate effectively, the capacity to be creative, and the capacity to lead. The most important talent in this strand is mathematical, scientific, and technological aptitude.

What are the subjects in STEM?

In all of the strands, there are two kinds of subjects; the specialized and core subjects. Specialized subjects are the subjects that are in the specific strand and track only. Core subjects are those that are implemented in all the strands and tracks including STEM. There are two (2) semesters in each Grade Level (Grade 11 and 12) in Senior High School, the First and Second or the last Semester. The subjects on the Second Semester are just the upgraded topics from the First Semester such as for the specialized subjects, from Pre-Calculus, it will become Basic Calculus, from General Biology 1 to General Biology 2.

Why choose STEM?

Some students choose STEM because they believed it would be challenging for them to complete this strand. However, some students pick STEM to prepare for college courses.

What is the difference between STEM and other strands?

The concentration on advanced concepts and topics distinguishes the STEM curriculum from the other strands and tracks.

Why is STEM important?

Science is ubiquitous; in fact, everything we observe is connected to science. Science has an impact on our ability to adapt to our surroundings. Engineering and mathematics are not only numbers; they also pertain to technological products. Mathematics is present in every profession and activity we engage in throughout our lives. It can also help us improve our analytical and thinking abilities. It also aids our understanding of the world. All of these topics must be studied in order for us to have a good chance of succeeding in life.

STEM Benefits

It encourages people to try new things. - if the inventor did not take some risks to test or build a hypothesis based on his or her hunch, technological innovation would not have been produced.

It encourages collaboration. - students work together to solve a problem.

Acceptance of failure - students learn from their mistakes and try again. We don't always win, but when we do, embracing failure makes us stronger and more optimistic about continuing the fight.

Critical Thinking - it broadens our horizons and teaches us how to apply what we've learned in the classroom to real-life situations.

Develop Self-Confidence - it encourages us to pursue STEM careers.

As a grade 12 student of Legazpi City Science High school, I'd like to point out that being in STEM is not easy, especially now when we're dealing with a pandemic while juggling our academics, but we must know how to deal with it. Time management and discipline are really important. STEM disciplines are extremely important since they can be used in the real world.

So, if I were you, I'd pursue a career in STEM. Allow yourself to explore and learn new things!
